Terhan Lights and Hollywood nights(2025)
Directed by Devyn Nace
Short | Documentary | Student
Synopsis
Before the Iranian Revolution, my grandfather Kourosh Bibiyan left Iran and set out to make a new life in America. He didn’t just adapt—he made history. In the heart of Los Angeles, he founded the first Persian television broadcasting network in the United States, paving the way for a new wave of Iranian-American media. This film follows his incredible journey through the lens of action, memory, and ambition. As his granddaughter and an aspiring filmmaker, I sit down with him to reflect on the risks he took, the stories he told, and the legacy he's still building. This is the story of an immigrant director who turned obstacles into opportunities, and of a new generation learning from the past to create the future.
Director Statement
Tehran Lights and Hollywood Nights marks my first step away from experimental filmmaking and into the world of documentary. This project is incredibly meaningful to me—not only because it is my first documentary, but because it tells the story of my grandfather, Kourosh Bibiyan.
The process was both technical and deeply personal. I conducted multiple interviews with my grandfather, encouraging him to open up, be vulnerable, and reflect on his extraordinary career. I wanted this film to capture not just an accurate portrayal of his journey, but also the emotion and legacy behind it. Beyond being a film for audiences, I also wanted it to be something he himself could look back on, recognizing the scale of his accomplishments and saying, “Wow, I did that.”
One of my favorite moments in the film comes at the end, when I ask him how he feels about me following in his footsteps as a filmmaker. On screen, he responds warmly that he loves it. What makes this moment particularly meaningful—and a little funny—is that years earlier, when I first told him I wanted to study film, he warned me not to pursue it. Clearly, his perspective has changed, and that full-circle moment is something I treasure.
The making of this film also involved extensive archival research. I delved into my grandfather’s vault of material and uncovered an astonishing collection of original footage, music videos, broadcasts, and behind-the-scenes moments that had never been seen before. This archive quickly became the heart of the project. It is a goldmine of Iranian-American media history, and preserving, sharing, and expanding it has become just as important to me as telling my grandfather’s personal story.
Beyond the Short
While this documentary began as a short film, it is only the beginning. My grandfather continues to work to this day, running Jaam-e-Jam Plus on YouTube—a platform that showcases original archives and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, alongside new projects he is developing. His story, and the archive that surrounds it, deserve a larger canvas.
My vision is to expand Tehran Lights and Hollywood Nights into a feature-length documentary that not only chronicles his journey, but also situates it within the broader history of Iranian-American media, identity, and cultural legacy. With the right support, this film can reach bigger screens—through festivals, networks, and streaming platforms—so that this history is preserved and celebrated on the scale it deserves.
If you are interested in funding, collaborating, or learning more about the feature-length project, please reach out. And in the meantime, I encourage you to explore Jaam-e-Jam Plus on YouTube, where the story continues to grow.
